At eight years of age, Thatcher Johnson-Welden persuaded her parents to allow her to take acting lessons at the local theatre. A couple of months later, she auditioned for and received her first theatre role. Since that time, Thatcher has starred in numerous plays, including the lead role in several productions, such as Peter Warren Hatcher in Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Milo in The Phantom Tollbooth, Beatrix Holiday in Promedy, Anne Frank in The Diary of Anne Frank, and Shelby in Steel Magnolias . In May 2015, Thatcher was the proud recipient of The THETA Award, The Twin City High School Excellence in Theatre Arts Award, for Best Actress for her portrayal of Anne Frank. In 2012, Thatcher began her transition to film, which has included roles in the multi-award-winning films Tree Hugger, Life Is Too Short, Perspective and Cardboard. Thatcher is proud of the diverse roles she has been offered in a wide variety of projects, such as Speechless (lead, silent film), managing puberty, social challenges, and (almost) everything (lead, teen with Asperger's Syndrome), Shorts4Cancer (lead, improv), and Tree Hugger (lead, dark fantasy), which screened at the Short Film Corner of the 2015 Cannes International Film Festival. At The Indie Gathering International Film Festival in August 2014, Thatcher received the award for Best Actress in The Monologue Competition.
In 2013, Thatcher began a new aspect in her career, voiceover work, and has already recorded for a vast array of audioplays, commercial projects, and other formats. That Thatchtastic Thatch, her first solo voiceover album, was released in 2015, and she has been asked to record a second solo album. Thatcher's acting experience has definitely added range and depth to her voiceover abilities, and her voiceover experience has definitely had a positive reciprocal effect on her stage and film acting. Also in 2013, Thatcher founded her own production company, Fernweh Productions, LLC (www.FernwehProductionsLLC.com). Through Fernweh Productions, she has produced short films, PSAs, promo videos, and photoshoots.
Thatcher graduated from the High School Drama Program at The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) in May 2016. In the summers, she teaches the Acting for Film class at the UNCSA Summer Drama Intensive.
Acting truly is Thatcher's first love, and she intends for this to be her lifelong career. All of these experiences, from local theatre to UNCSA and from voiceover to Fernweh Productions, have resulted in Thatcher becoming a more effective collaborator. Currently, Thatcher is actively seeking new opportunities to audition, improve her acting skills, and work with new writers, directors, producers, and actors. Thatcher’s vast interest in varied activities such as music, dance, animals, stage combat, archery and artillery, cooking, and athletics including soccer, rock climbing, sandboarding, indoor skydiving, and trapeze, along with her outgoing personality, academic achievements, travel experience, volunteer commitments, and respectful nature has added to her character development for roles and her professionalism on set. As Thatcher continues to grow as an actor and as a member of society, she will continue to search for new challenges both on and off the stage and screen.
